You may have encountered numerous anti-aging skincare products and routines in your quest for youthful-looking skin. Anti-aging skincare focuses on maintaining and enhancing the health of your skin to combat the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. By understanding the science behind these products and incorporating them into your daily routine, you can effectively delay and reduce visible signs of aging.
Selecting the best anti-aging skincare products can be overwhelming as the market is filled with options that cater to different skin types and concerns. For anti-aging skincare, it’s recommended that you prioritize products containing key active ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid for their proven effectiveness in slowing down the aging process. However, doctors don’t recommend retinol if trying to conceive or pregnant. Please consult this post on pregnancy-safe skincare if you want to have a baby or are currently gestating!
Establishing a consistent skincare regimen tailored to your unique skin type and needs is essential for the best results. Remember that it’s never too early or too late to take care of your skin, as anti-aging skincare can be adopted at any stage in life. However, the earlier you start, the better your skin will be in the long term.
Incorporating healthy lifestyle habits like eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated with filtered water, and protecting your skin from the sun will further enhance the efficacy of your chosen anti-aging skincare products.

Understanding Skin Aging
Like all things in life, skin aging is influenced by both biological and environmental factors.
Biological Factors
Genetics plays a crucial role in determining how your skin changes over time. As you age, your skin loses its elasticity due to decreased elastin and collagen production. This decrease leads to wrinkles, sagging, and a less youthful appearance. Hormonal changes, such as a decline in estrogen levels during menopause, can also contribute to skin aging by reducing skin’s moisture retention and elasticity.
Environmental Influences
Aside from the biological aspects, environmental factors play a significant role in skin aging. One of the most prominent external influences is sun exposure. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can cause premature aging, leading to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential to protect your skin and limit sun exposure whenever possible.
Another environmental factor that affects the aging process is pollution. Pollutants in the air can cause oxidative stress on your skin, leading to inflammation, uneven skin tone, and premature aging. You can take steps to minimize these effects by utilizing a skincare routine featuring antioxidants, such as vitamin C, to neutralize harmful free radicals. Additionally, in your home, you can use a high-quality air filter.
Aside from these, certain lifestyle choices may also impact your skin’s aging process. For example, smoking can accelerate the aging process, as it reduces blood flow to the skin, while stress and lack of sleep can also be detrimental to your complexion.
By understanding the causes of skin aging, you can take preventive measures and adopt a personalized skincare routine to help maintain more youthful, healthier-looking skin.
Key Ingredients in Anti-Aging Skincare
Retinoids
Retinoids are a form of vitamin A and play a crucial role in the anti-aging skincare process. They are known for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and boosting collagen production. Retinoids are available as over-the-counter products, such as retinol or prescription-strength tretinoin. For best results, apply a retinoid product at night and remember to wear sunscreen during the day, as retinoids can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. There is some concern with retinoid levels and cancer risk. I (Anna Rapp) choose to avoid retinoids. Retinoids are not recommended in pregnancy or while trying to conceive.
Retinatural Complex
Researchers looking for a safer alternative to Retinol took two of the most powerhouse plant-derived ingredients, Bakuchiol and Swiss Alpine Rose, available and created a scientific breakthrough. Bakuchiol has been shown to provide skin-care results that are comparable to retinol without harmful side effects such as skin irritation, increased sun sensitivity, and issues in pregnancy. Swiss Alpine rose boosts the skin’s antioxidant defense.
I use Beautycounter’s Countertime Skincare Collection, which is based on the Retinatural Complex but also includes multiple peptides and antioxidants to slow skin aging. Unfortunately, Beautycounter isn’t available to purchase right now, but hopefully, they will be back in Fall 2024. In the meantime, I recommend Crunchi for squeaky clean and pregnancy-safe makeup and skincare. Check out my post on Crunchi here. Antioxidants
By now, antioxidants are well-known as safe, and effective anti-aging ingredients. Antioxidants are essential in combating environmental stressors and protecting skin from sun damage. One of the most well-known antioxidants used for skin care is Vitamin C, which helps fight free radicals, supports collagen production, and helps even out your skin tone.
My favorite clean C Serums are:
Peptides
Peptides are amino acid chains that act as building blocks for proteins in your skin, like collagen and elastin. They aid in skin cell regeneration and can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Key peptides to look for in anti-aging products include:
- Argireline: Relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of expression lines.
- Matrixyl: Supports collagen and elastin production, repairing aged skin.
- L-Glutathione: Removes free radicals.
Including anti-aging products that contain these peptides in your skincare routine can help maintain your skin’s firmness and elasticity.
I love peptides. My favorite clean anti-aging products with peptides include:
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps retain moisture in the skin. As a key ingredient in most anti-aging skincare, it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, providing intense hydration and a plumping effect, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for serums containing hyaluronic acid, and incorporate them into your skincare routine to maintain skin’s suppleness and smoothness.
I am OBSESSED with Beautycounter’s Mighty Plump Ceramide Water Cream! It’s main ingredients are Hyaluronic Acids and Ceramides (read about them next).
My two favorite clean anti-aging products featuring Hyaluronic Acid are:
- Beautycounter’s Mighty Plump Ceramide Water Cream
- Pure Haven’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Effective Anti-Aging Routines
Cleansing and Exfoliation
The cleansing and exfoliation process is crucial to any anti-aging skincare routine. It’s essential to double-cleanse your face, using a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. This helps maintain the skin’s barrier function and prevent dehydration. If you’ve never heard of double-cleansing before, it’s done by simply cleansing your face with an oil-based cleanser first and then a water-based cleanser. This ensures that all impurities are removed from your face before you apply skincare products.
Types of Cleansers:
- Cream Cleansers: A cream cleanser has a thicker, creamier texture and is formulated with ingredients, like plant-based oils, to help the skin retain moisture. Sometimes called cleansing “milks” or “lotions” cream cleansers are gentle – they cleanse the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. My favorite clean cream cleanser is Beautycounter’sCounterstart Cococream Cleanser. This is not my favorite kind of anti-aging cleanser.
- Foaming Cleansers: A foaming cleanser is a skin cleanser that foams up, providing tactile satisfaction. To ensure the best lather, use plenty of water. It works by removing the excess and unnecessary oil from the skin’s surface, preventing the formation of acne in the process. My favorite clean foaming cleanser options are Countermatch Refresh Foaming Cleanser and Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser, for acne-prone skin. This is not my preferred type of cleanser for anti-aging.
- Cleansing Bar: Cleansing Bars typically generate less waste than a typical cleanser so this is a great choice if sustainability is important to you (And it should be!) The Beautycounter Charcoal Cleansing Bar can be used on your face, feet, armpits, and anywhere else on your body that gets a bit stinky. It is also great for people who struggle with acne on their body! It may be too harsh for aging, dry skin, however. Crunchi makes a Gentle Facial Cleansing Bar for sensitive skin, which is lovely to incorporate into a double-cleansing routine.
- Cleansing Oil: Cleansing oils usually contain an oil base and a traditional skin-cleansing ingredient called a surfactant, which helps bind to dirt on the skin and remove it without disrupting the skin barrier. Just make sure you work them onto dry skin so they break down makeup, sunscreen, oil, and dirt before rinsing off with lukewarm water or gently wiping away with a soft washcloth or muslin cloth. This is my preferred type of cleanser for anti-aging purposes, and my favorite clean cleansing oil options are Countertime Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil and Counter+ Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm.
Additionally, exfoliate your skin three times a week using a gentle chemical exfoliant, such as glycolic or lactic acid. This step aids in shedding dead skin cells, allowing better absorption of products and promoting a radiant complexion.
Here are my favorite clean exfoliating options:
- Overnight Resurfacing Peel– Made with natural acids, this leave-on AHA/BHA peel improves skin texture and boosts clarity without irritation or over-drying. It is so gentle it is recommended for brides on the night before their wedding. I have sensitive skin, and have never had a problem with this. It gives a delightful tingle when first applied that goes away after a minute or so. I use this a couple times per week under my night cream.
- Reflect Effect Bamboobuff Exfoliating Polish– If you love exfoliating you are going to LOVE this. It is a gentle bamboo based exfoliating POWDER that you can add to ANY cleanser. So no matter what cleanser you are using, once or twice a week, or whenever you have the emotional urge to SCRUB you can add this to your cleanser and get a very satisfying exfoliation!
Targeted Treatments
Incorporating targeted treatments in your skincare regime can address specific concerns related to aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Consider using products containing ingredients like retinol, which helps boost collagen production and promotes cell turnover, and antioxidants such as vitamin C, which protect your skin from oxidative stress and free radicals. These ingredients contribute to firmer, more radiant skin, effectively combating signs of aging.
My favorite clean anti-aging serums include:
- Pure Haven’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum
- All Bright Beautycounter C Serum
- Crunchi I Am Bright C Serum
- Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum
- Crunchi Goldenlight Multi-Peptide Serum
Moisturizing and Protection
Lastly, it’s vital to maintain your skin’s moisture levels and protect it from harmful external factors. In your daily routine, include a hydrating moisturizer that suits your skin type and an SPF product to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sun protection is crucial as prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays can cause premature aging, skin damage, and hyperpigmentation.
My Favorite Clean Anti-Aging Moisturizers Include:
- Beautycounter’s Mighty Plump Ceramide Water Cream (read my review)
- Countertime Antioxidant Soft Cream (Day Cream)
- Countertime Tetrapeptide Supreme Cream (night cream)
- Crunchi’s Nightlight Youth Activating Advanced Facial Cream

Myths and Misconceptions
Plenty of myths and misconceptions are floating around in the anti-aging skincare world. In this section, we’ll explore a few common ones and provide some clarity.
Myth 1: Expensive Skincare Products Are Better
You might think high-priced $400 skincare products will yield better results, but that’s not always true. What truly matters is the formulation and the ingredients a product contains. Researching and choosing products based on their ingredients and effectiveness rather than their price tag is essential. This will ensure that you do not waste money on products that will have minimal effect on your skin in the long term. A good product around $100 will give you just as good results as one that costs $400- if it has the right ingredients!
Myth 2: The Right Skin Cream Can Keep Your Skin Looking Young Forever
While it’s true that some creams, such as those that contain retinol, can help reduce wrinkles, no skincare product can completely stop the aging process. It’s more beneficial to focus on a holistic approach to skincare, including a healthy diet, plenty of water, and sun protection, instead of focusing only on skincare products to keep you looking young and healthy.
Myth 3: You Need To Use Anti-Aging Products All Over Your Body
The notion that anti-aging face creams should be used all over the body is a misconception. While these products can be effective on your face, they might not be suitable for the rest of your body and can be costly when used extensively. Instead, focus on using products specifically designed for the body that offer hydration, sun protection, and other essential skincare benefits.
Always do thorough research and consult with professionals to ensure you find the best products and strategies for your skincare routine. By understanding these myths and misconceptions, you’ll be better equipped to make informed decisions about your anti-aging skincare journey.
